Aster tataricus – The Tatarian Aster is a very long-blooming, late season perennial. Showy one-inch lavender-purple aster flowers float in branched clusters atop strong stems like flying carpets at head level in the autumn garden. It is said that this Aster can grow to 10 feet tall though ours has never achieved that height. A very good bee and butterfly plant, this perennial aster will colonize and quickly when happy. This is an excellent candidate for a naturalistic field-like garden with Ironweed (Vernonia), Joe-pye Weed (Eupatorium), Milkweed (Asclepias), perennial Sunflower (Helianthus) and warm season ornamental grasses – all beautiful together. But beware: Tatarian Aster when happy will spread live a slow motion wave, take over and squelch more meek garden companions. Plant it in a location in which you will not rue the day. Established pot grown perennial from division.
