Albuca shawii
Plant Type:
ARID LAND PLANTSAlbuca shawii (syn. trichophylla) (ex: Ellen Hornig) - Bright yellow Albuca flowers for extended weeks on end in summer. Fine, grassy foliage and multitudes of flowers make for a delicate appearance. Another great bulb from South Africa's Eastern Cape to Limpopo Province. Fully to mostly sunny siting planted in a light, quick draining mix is crucial. More moisture in summer is helpful; too much or extensive winter wet is an anathema though it must be said that as far as South African bulbs go this is easy and forgiving. Hardiness is still being tested. Many claim USDA zone 7 as the northern hardiness edge. Some claim hardiness into the minus teens (zone 5). It is certainly possible that greater hardiness occurs in differing populations - provenance can make for surprising genetic variation. And persistent snow cover can provide a blanket of protection from extremes. We're waxing conservative and will update should reports establish better facts. Established pot grown bulb(s).
It is imperative that gardeners understand their USDA planting zones. If you are purchasing a plant or plants in the autumn shipping window it is your responsibility to know whether or not the plant is appropriate for fall planting in your zone. Generally we caution that plants at the northern end of their climate range are best considered for spring planting so they have a chance to settle in and grab hold to their new environs. If you purchase a tricky plant now and it perishes in the winter please understand that we will not take responsibility. If you are uncertain be prudent, wait until spring.
