Vaccinium macrocarpum 'Hamilton' – This genetically very dwarf selection of our native Cranberry slowly stretches out forming a small evergreen mat composed of dark green glossy leaves evenly spaced so as to make a very even, clean and handsomely textured mat. The leaves turn ruby in the fall and winter. Small pink to white urn-shaped flowers will form deep red cranberries when pollinated; however, for us this cultivar has been a scant bloomer. Contrary to popular myth Vaccinium macrocarpum does not require bog-like situations in order to thrive; “cranberry bogs” are essentially paddies that are flooded at harvest time to more easily collect the fruits which float. Site in full sun planted in acid fertile evenly moist sandy loam for best results; as with many ericaceous shrubs they do not respond well to dry soils. As with most if not all broad leaf evergreens spring planting is best. Cutting grown.
