Codonopsis lanceolata - Broad light green glaucous bells dangle and nod. Interior colors can vary with solid burgundy tips, sometimes lighter, others darker. The interior base is usually speckled in the same color but sometimes the insides of the flowers are curiously and quite beautifully striped. Blossoms open late season on the lovely Bonnet Bellflower. Flowers suggest their allegiance to Campanulaceae. Attractive leaves are a rising mobile of ellipse-shaped blades. This sweet climber's nativity is China, Japan, Korea into a swath of eastern Russia. Easy and fun Bonnet Bellflower is well employed on a trellis and is fetching wending through and among shrubs. Plant in a light, draining mix set in sun to part shade. Beware slugs and snails on young, susceptible emerging growth. At the very northern end of its growing range an organic mulch with aid in getting it through the winter. Note that the roots resent disturbance. Roots are eaten both raw and cooked in Korea; if you were to be someone's meal you'd resent disturbance, too. Medicinally Codonopsis lanceolata can be helpful with boils, milk-flow blockages and lung abscesses. Established, potted Bonnet Bellflower carefully from division.
