Arum euxinum
Arum
Plant Type:
BULBSArum euxinum - This Arum is variable. The incarnation as in the offsets we are offering is solid pale, luminous green - sort of the color of the cool white-touched-with-green rind of winter melon just behind the outer peel: the effect is rather like the reflector behind the electric bulb in a lighthouse. A beautiful rich picotee violet-purple edge limns the margins of the spathe. A light tan spadix juts up cloaked by the spathe. Some individuals of this fascinating arum are spotted purple in spring sporting an open, blade-shaped and concave spathe from which the pale tan spadix juts up. Some individuals display a purple wash throughout the hood's interior becoming pale green to greenish white towards the base where the one side of the hood gently wraps over the other. We find all the aroids fascinating, primitive, oddly alluring, curious, with some - those emitting stink exuding implied malevolence. They are amazing. In flower their exotic texture is unequaled in the garden adding distinctive interest. The leaves aren't bad either: relatively narrow, elongated arrowheads in deep satiny green. From the Black Sea Coast region of Northern Turkey this somewhat rare aroid will revel in light to dappled shade in moist ground. In Turkey it is often found in marshy areas. And it may be a better doer a bit farther north than many of its cousins. Many sources indicate USDA zone 5 hardiness. We have placed cautionary parentheses around the 5 implying a more conservative posture. Established pot grown bulb.
