Spiraea thunbergii ‘Ogon’ – 'Ogon' is the gold-leafed form of Thunberg Spirea with all leaves infused with soft yellow. It’s not a harsh color at all, very mellow, which accounts for its cultivar synonym ‘Mellow Yellow’. It has all the attributes of ‘Mt. Fuji’ but is especially lovely in open shade to part sun situations where it gently glows with its lovely willowy light yellow foliage. In 2009 at the time of this writing, mid-November, it was a fluorescent orange and gold in the autumn landscape. If your Thunberg Spirea becomes rangy through the years they respond well to pruning; just be sure to cut them down after flowering so you don’t lose that season’s early bloom.
