Rhus aromatica 'Gro-Low'
Squawbush
Plant Type:
DECIDUOUS SHRUBSRhus aromatica 'Gro-Low' - A handsome low growing form of Fragrant Sumac. The tri-foliate leaves are medium to dark green and glossy turning red and orange in the autumn before leaf drop. We have seen a golden cast in some years and sometimes purple, too. 'Gro-Low' is a female form whose small yellow flowers about 1 inch long appear in spring. Red fruits follow and persist through the season into the autumn. Winter stems scramble, undulate and though of no significant interest especially in the short days of the year are attractive when planted in combination with contrasting plants, set before conifers, broadleaf evergreens or deciduous shrubs - columnar or those with handsomely colored winter wood will maximize the aesthetics. This is an altogether handsome large-scale ground covering shrub growing only 2 feet tall with a spread of 6 to 8 feet. Site in full to nearly full sun for best performance planted in fertile to average soils that drain consistently and well. Cutting grown.
