Hydrangea paniculata 'Unique'

Panicle Hydrangea

Plant Type:

DECIDUOUS SHRUBS

Hydrangea paniculata 'Unique' -  Especially large and gorgeous symmetrical creamy white cones end in a point - no puffy cotton-candied gumdroppy thing here! Panicles grow to at least 8 inches in length and very possibly longer in a mix of sterile and fertile parts. Foliage is glossier than the usually matte-finished green of most cultivars. Flower heads eventually turn brown and tend to remain on the shrub through the winter providing modest interest during the coldest part of the year. This is a larger grower, 8 to 10 feet tall; but if you have the space this is most worthy. But you may keep it smaller if you like as Hydrangea paniculata in all of its renditions flowers on new wood and can be pruned down to lower leaf buds in late winter. Part to full sun in fertile soil that holds onto some moisture between rains. The species hails from China; 'Unique' is of garden origin. Established, potted cutting grown shrub.

Genus Overview: Hydrangea paniculata

Common Name: Panicle Hydrangea

Hydrangea paniculata. The Panicle Hydrangea is an easy, tough shrub. Blooming on new wood in the mid/late season garden for many weeks on end it exhibits fair drought tolerance once it settles into the landscape. Large cone-shaped white flowers become infused with rose pink as they age. They will turn brown in autumn and as in the case of 'Nana' hang on through the winter for an extra season on interest. Site in full to half sun planted in any good garden soil that drains. All we sell are established shrubs from cuttings. All are a manageable size to easily get them settled into your landscape. The specie's native range is China and Japan.
