Allium sp. (still to be ID'd)

Plant Type:

SUN PERENNIALS

Allium sp. (still to be ID’d... may be Allium maximowiczii ssp. shibutsiense 'Alba') With very light bright blue tubular, fistulous foliage and white flowers this yet to be identified onion is one we like so very much we’re offering it though we do not yet know its name! It mimics the look of well-known chives (A. schoenoprasum) though it is a tad shorter in stature. Showy, luminous tear-shaped buds, white and barely touched with Granny Smith apple green, float like glowing phosphorescent lanterns above the blue arching foliage. The pure white chive flowers follow in June. The foliage remains quite blue all through the growing season. This is a beautiful species! The size, characteristics and look fits the parameters of the alpine subspecies of A. maximowiczii. Site this fantastic ornamental onion in fertile, well-draining soil in plenty of sun where it will delight you with late spring flowers bobbing above its handsome blue foliage. It has not been a self-sowing nuisance at Quackin’ Grass. If ordered in autumn your Allium will arrive as dormant potted bulbs.

Genus Overview: Allium

The Ornamental Onions are a large group with many garden-worthy species. We’ve selected some that have performed well for us. Most require full to nearly full sun in most any average garden soil. The addition of lime is helpful in acid soils. All our Alliums are offered as pot-grown flowering-sized bulbs from our stock plants.
