Patrinia villosa

Patrinia

Plant Type:

SHADE PERENNIALS

Patrinia villosa remarkable member of the Valerianaceae with domes of white flowers assembled in handsomely articulated broad clusters atop stems 3.5 to 5 feet or maybe slightly taller float like distant banks of perfect horizontal clouds. Flowering stems arise from coarse, dark green tufted rosettes of foliage. The assemblage of leaves which grow approximately 6 to 8 inches tall remain looking good and green all season extending into the climax of flowering. Blooming for weeks at the very end of the growing season this easy plant is not only useful but just plain beautiful with all the late season bloomers – from Solidago to grasses, Vernonia to Persicaria, asters, late blooming daylilies and the myriad of composites which fill this season with joy. This plant came to us from the original Heronswood Nursery and has been a late season mainstay in our gardens. It self sows with wonderful abandon in the garden for us from which it has never strayed and where it is most welcome. Patrinia is content in open shade to full sun. Fertile draining soil to woodland soils suit Patrinia villosa well. The hypothesis that Patrinia is an alternate host to daylily rust has proven untrue. Patrinia villosa is not an alternate host to daylily rust. Established pot grown plant from seed.
