Clerodendrum trichotomum (ex: Carole Williamson) – This is the Harlequin Glory Bower. White jasmine-scented starry flowers set in red tepals open on open terminal panicles in late summer. One round porcelain to dark blue berry studs each set of starry deep rich violet tepals in fall, very showy, striking and beautiful. Ovate leaves are relatively large, entire and simple. Our selection which came from Carole Williamson of Columbia, Connecticut has apparent greater hardiness as Clerodendrum is usually felt to be more at home in USDA climate zone 7, perhaps into 6. Consider carefully where you might want to place Harlequin Glory Bower as it is a suckering shrub and can be an aggressive spreader. At the northern end of its range Clerodendrum may be treated as a cutback shrub. Site in full to nearly full sun planted any decent loam that drains. Cutting grown from either stem or root cuttings.
