Pachysandra axillaris 'Windcliff'... Maybe? Maybe not! (Hinkley) - Some new info has come our way which has very much put into question the proper designation for the plant we have been offering as P. axillaris 'Windcliff'. Our original stock came from Dan Hinkley's original Heronswood Nursery. They were very careful about production errors in that I always received correctly identified plants that I had ordered. However, this may have been improperly identified or was sent by mistake. If so QGN has now proliferated the error. If this is indeed true, please know that I am extremely ashamed and sorry. The plant we are offering may very well be P. terminalis 'Green Sheen'. Though not a fan of P. terminalis in that it has been grossly over-used in a cliched manner the more diminutive stature and the medium to dark green lustrous foliage on this form is fetching and beautiful. Leaves are smaller in size and stature, more refined than its larger growing cousins and exhibit a lustrous, lacquered finish as if varnished layer after new layer to a striking gloss. Clustered white axillary flowers composed of thread-like petals are showy and fragrant. Adding to the interest is that the base of each flower is red-pink. Flowers resemble bottle brushes somewhat reminiscent of Sarcococca. Adaptable from full sun to open shade, site this Pachysandra in fertile soil. Though relatively slow to spread once this beautiful plant thickens it becomes a glossy dense carpet and is virtually weed-proof. Provide extra moisture in droughty summers, a mulch would be helpful. Established pot grown division.
