Waldsteinia ternata – The Barren Strawberry develops into a handsome, evergreen ground cover. Dark green leathery, satiny leaves loosely resemble strawberry. The bright five-petaled April flowers could easily be confused with those of wild strawberry except for big difference: they are sunny yellow on short stalks that rise above the foliage mat. When weather turn cold the green mat turns chocolate-bronze. In northeastern Connecticut the leaves disappear only when the harshest January temperatures arrive rising again in April; in more southerly haunts it will remain evergreen. Site in open to dappled shade. It can tolerate a surprising amount of sun if the soil remains moist. Rabbits and deer have never troubled it here... Were it we could say this about any number of fine plants! It is an easy care perennial with virtually no maintenance. Pot grown division.
