Vitex agnus-castus 'Abbeville Blue'
Chastetree
Plant Type:
DECIDUOUS SHRUBSVitex agnus-castus 'Abbeville Blue' – Down south the beautiful Chastetree will develop into a small, rounded tree growing 15 to 20 feet tall covered with large, narrow spikes of blue flowers in summer. For us up north 'Abbeville Blue' is a reliable easy-care cutback shrub with multiple stems growing up to 7 feet in northeastern Connecticut each season flowering in August and September from the tips of new wood. Its dark green, satin-finished palmate leaves remain clean all summer long appearing not to be troubled by pests. The showy flower spires of 'Abbeville Blue', glorious against the dark green backdrop, are a magnet for bees and butterflies. We've even seen hummingbirds joining the feast. For us Chastetree has been a permanent and welcome fixture in our gardens whereas Butterfly Bush sometimes gets decimated in a harsh winter (except for 'White Profusion' which has been permanent here). Full sun in fertile, organic soil that retains moisture between summer rains. Cutting grown.
