Silphium terebinthinaceum - Prairie Rosinweed, also known as Prairie Dock, is among the largest of herbaceous prairie perennials. Stalks that can reach 9 feet branch as they reach towards the sky and display yellow composites aplenty. Flowering in midsummer landing pad daisies may reach 3 inches diameter and draw all manner of pollinators, bees and butterflies included. Basal foliage is a big bold vase of spade-shaped leaves, in-penetrable to weedy interlopers. Growing as tall as 18 inches with a width of 12 inches individual leaves the broad paddles exhibit the coarse texture of something akin to shark skin... sandpaper might keep predators at bay? Found in Mississippi and Arkansas north to Ontario, Ohio to Virginia and south to Georgia and all states in between. Average to fertile draining soil in full sun. Established potted Prairie Dock from seed or division.
