Saxifraga stolonifera 'Maroon Beauty'
Creeping Rockfoil
Plant Type:
SHADE PERENNIALSSaxifraga stolonifera 'Maroon Beauty' (ex: Ruth and Whitney Gorham) - Creeping Rockfoil is just plain beautiful. If you are not familiar with Saxifraga stolonifera this may be a good time... Rounded leaves exhibit red to red-purple tissue between bright green veins. The nicely demarcated color contrast creates a pleasing, pretty and artistic patterning. Furthermore, the very hirsute rounded leaves set on red petioles augmenting the rich complexity. Leaves exhibit also an attractive juicy red flush on the undersides. This very worthwhile shade lover requires fertile, moisture retaining soil. It spreads from wiry stolons forming a most handsome ground cover that never seems to squelch surrounding plants... of course, you wouldn't want to pair it with that stratospherically expensive miniature stupid-slow growing whatsit-thing-a-ma-bob that would wither at the sight of a mere weed glaring at it from a distance of three feet away! The mat of gorgeous leaves grows only 2 to 4 inches tall. But with large compatriots it's well-behaved and beautiful... Hosta, Polygonatum, Fern, Ginger, Helleborus, Rodgersia, Astilboides - you get the picture. Pretty little white flowers open on branched stems on 6-inch possibly up to perhaps 8 inches in late spring occurring en masse like a snow squall. Hardiness estimates are all over the board. Ours had been growing for years in USDA zone 5b in one of the beautiful gardens of Ruth and Whitney Gorham. Established pot grown from harvested stolons.
