Rubus arcticus
Arctic Bramble
Plant Type:
DECIDUOUS SHRUBSRubus arcticus – This is the tiny Arctic Bramble, sometimes called the Arctic Raspberry and Arctic Bramble. This delightful little sub-shrub forms pink raspberry flowers. When fertilized with a different clone Arctic Bramble produces beautiful little glossy red raspberries that are, so I am told, very tasty for birds and man alike, though it would require a lot of these small fruits to satisfy an appetite. We are told they dangle from stems like red and ruby jewels. We're attempting to locate a different clone from the one in our possession although curiously a few of our plants did develop raspberries in 2015 and 16. Cross-pollination with another Rubus specie? Some self-pollinating tendencies?? We don't know! But the little fruits were gem-like, surprising and welcome. The wrinkled usually trifoliate leaves complete with serrated rounded lobes emerge bronze and mature semi-glossed green. Site in part to full sun planted in fertile draining soil. Arctic Bramble is a slowly expanding and clumping plant. I have not been able to find the hardiness zones for the Arctic Bramble but I’m going to take a stab at USDA zones 2 to 6, perhaps into zone 7. Rubus arcticus is circumpolar to north temperate, found in many countries. Established potted Arctic Bramble by division.
