Roscoea purpurea 'Vannin'
Purple Roscoea
Plant Type:
SHADE PERENNIALSRoscoea purpurea 'Vannin' HWJK2406 - Large flowers are lovely, ginger-like flowering in late summer in multiples from the tops of staunch stalks. The two lower lobes are pastel purple, the upper portion of the flower is usually whiter. The fat pseudostem, formed of strongly perfoliate overlapping leaf sheaths is rich dark red. The gestalt of leaves, stalks and flowers is showy and handsome. Leaves are long, broad simple blades ending in a point, a bit like corn leaves but cupped exhibiting heavier texture and broad gentle undulations. In hotter zones please find a cool spot for this beauty as it will languish in too much heat. Deer don't like it but you will. Fertile moist ground in shade to dappled light just as long as the sun doesn't settle for long on this fine perennial. This is a clonal selection made by the esteemed Crug Farm in England. For gardeners towards the northern end of its range spring planting is advised. Established potted Purple Roscoea from division.
