Parrotia persica 'Vanessa' (ex: Louis Raymond) - 'Vanessa' is a fastigiate form of Persian Ironwood. It will grow to be approximately half as wide as tall, about 40 feet at maturity with a breadth of 20 feet. In late winter (early spring up north) tiny glowing red flowers appear on the stems from small dark brown round buds. You'll have to come close to the tree to observe them. The bark on older trees becomes a mottled mosaic in sienna brown, gray, nickel, green and white. This is another woody whose bark character develops over time and it is rich. New, alternate and simple leaves exhibit a purple-bronze flush upon emerging, expanding and maturing they become dark green. Autumn brings confetti colors before leaf drop. The growth rate will be surprisingly fast when coddled with extra water during droughts and when interred in good loam. Well-drained fertile soils, friable and organic are suggested. Full sun is recommended though it will tolerate some shade. 'Vanessa' will withstand drought when well-established. Potted starter branched tree from cutting.
