Indigofera kirilowii 'Bernheim'
Giant Chinese Indigo
Plant Type:
DECIDUOUS SHRUBSIndigofera kirilowii 'Bernheim' - Endearing, gently weeping clusters of pink pea flowers strut their stuff in spring from the many terminals atop multitudinous stems. The main flush is in June and July with sporadic flowers afterwards into fall. Inflorescence is reminiscent of Wisteria. The foliage is pinnate and soft in appearance, pleasing to the eye all the season long on this handsome shrub. The leaves age golden in autumn before dropping. This large growing form of Giant Chinese Indigo received its name from Plant Delights honoring the Bernheim Arboretum in Kentucky where this particular clone originated. It came from Buddy Hubbuch who was a prime plantsman there. Where he acquired it is unclear to us though probably embedded in the arboretum's records. The species, variable in size, originates in Outer Mongolia south and east through China into Korea and Japan. Average to fertile, draining soil in part to full sun. Easy, handsome, trouble-free... what's not to like?! Established potted shrub from cutting.
