Ozark Witchhazel

Plant Type:

DECIDUOUS SHRUBS

Hamamelis vernalis 'Purpurea' (aka 'Washington Park') - Interesting form of the Ozark Witchhazel with burgundy-purple late winter to early spring flowers instead of the typical rusty orange. The shade is rich and saturated. Rich red-purple autumn color develops about one week later than other selections. Otherwise this is very much like the species which is to say terrific! Its alternate handle comes from the fact that it was collected from the Washington Park Arboretum in Seattle, Washington originally having been acquired from the Henry Kohankie Nursery in Perry, Ohio. The species is found in Missouri, Oklahoma and Arkansas. Where this purple-flowered form was specifically discovered we don't know. Part shade in fertile, draining soil. Established pot grown shrub from cutting.
