Bergenia pacumbis x ciliata 'Susan Riley'

Bergenia

Plant Type:

SHADE PERENNIALS

Bergenia pacumbis x ciliata 'Susan Riley' – a gorgeous, bold hybrid with frilly symmetrical pie-crusted edges upon the large, hirsute and rounded paddle leaves. As the plant becomes adapted to its planting site the leaves can grow to the size of small dinner plates. In more sun they develop a pink-red infusion. Stunning! Then the glossy medium green with pubescence on both sides of the foliage, they will contrast beautifully set with more refined and delicate plants. At the end of the growing season leaves often pick up a beautiful red infusion just in time for the gardens' autumn festivities. Very attractive clustered pink flowers atop thick stalks emerge in spring prior to the emergence of the amazing leaves. An even added bonus is that the alluring leaves can remain semi-evergreen at the warmer end of the growing range. This extraordinary, well-behaved Bergenia is clumping. A colony is a memorable sight. Fertile, friable soil in part sun – probably best in afternoon open shade. Big pots worth the expense. Some of the common names associated with any among the species or hybrids in the genus, Bergenia are... oh, God help me: Elephant-eared Saxifrage, Pig Squeak, Heartleaf Bergenia, Siberian Tea, Elephant Ears among, no doubt and unfortunately, others. Established pot grown division.
