Bergenia ciliata subsp. ligulata (aka Bergenia ligulata) - Leaves emerge bronze-green with more bronzing on the undersides where veins remain green - nice! Hirsute leaves mature into large, bold green rounded paddles up to 10 inches wide sporting ruffled pie-crusted crinkled margins where a concentration of hairs occurs - nicer!! Towards the southern end of its range this species can remain evergreen showing off red tones in winter - nicest!!! Top that with pale pink spring flowers with carmine highlights at their bases and stems showily clustered on fleshy stems floating above those amazing leaves - nicestissimo!!!! (Wayne... please stop.) Bergenias, especially the larger ones, seem to be somewhat ignored by gardeners in the U.S. Why? I don't understand it. They're bold, they're beautiful; get used to it. Fertile ground in shade to part shade. Avoid hot afternoon exposure. Established potted Pigsqueak in full 2-quart square.
