Weigela subsessilis 'Canary'

Weigela

Plant Type:

DECIDUOUS SHRUBS

Weigela subsessilis ‘Canary’ – This is also an early bloomer with multitudes of pale yellow flowers with a bare apple green infusion when first opening, turning completely light yellow at maturity. It is a soft and beguiling color. Though this plant may very well be a selection of W. subsessilis it could just as well actually be a hybrid; no one seems to know for sure. Regardless, everyone who sees it is enamored.

We were recently blessed with information from Dick Lighty regarding W. s. 'Canary' and its origins:

"Weigela subsessilis ‘Canary’ (registered 1996 AABGA) – A selection made from among a number of collections from various locales in South Korea obtained through Chollipo Arboretum.  Approximately 300 plants were grown to obtain this pure lemon-yellow flowered clone.  The typical species opens light yellow and quickly changes to brick-red. This clone was named for its persistent soft yellow color. It blooms with yellow magnolia cultivars."

From Jan G. (NJ) on 6.6.2013 - Just received my order of Weigela "Canary" and Lespedeza "Gibralter". Their condition is amazing! I have never in all the 50 years I have been ordering plants from nurseries had such fabulous looking, healthy, big, strong plants. You are the Best!! Jan G.

Genus Overview: Weigela

Common Name: Weigela

Weigela are easy-natured shrubs with spring funnel-shaped flowers in axillary cymes blossoming on 2nd year wood. Weiglea is happy in average to good draining soils in sun. All W. florida cultivars bloom in middle to late spring. They are useful, forgiving components in mixed plantings with either perennials or other shrubs. They are best planted with companions that offer autumn and winter interest as Weigela is coarse when the foliage drops. Originating in Japan our offerings are of garden origin except for wonderful W. subsessilis which is from China and flowers extra early in the growing season – long before W. florida. All of the following are cutting grown.
