Hieracium maculatum 'Leopard' – Modest, useful and under-appreciated is Spotted Hawkweed. Golden dandelion-like flowers sway in summer breezes for many weeks on end atop stems rising above gray-green tufts of basal foliage heavily spotted and mottled with brownish maroon. It is free-flowering and lengthy in its bloom. Foliage remains attractively spotted and splotched all through the growing season. Site Spotted Hawkweed in full to part sun planted in any modest soil that drains well. 'Leopard' is drought tolerant once established. I personally delight in this understated perennial and am happy for its perennial presence. For us 'Leopard' thrives in sun and has self-sown and prospers equally in open shade. Good in Alpine and Rock Gardens, front of the border, containers, edging; it attracts butterflies. Pot grown divisions.
