Ruscus aculeatus ‘Wheeler's Variety’ – This Butcher's Broom sturdy green photosynthetic stems are cloaked in spiny matte finish evergreen foliage in a medium shade. The leaves are actually "pseudo-leaves" properly called cladophyls. Odd, waxy, axillary flowers like six-pointed stars with violet-purple centers become pale greenish towards the tips. 'Wheeler's Variety' produces showy red berries in autumn which persistently stud the shrub through winter. This selection is a self-fruitful so does not require pollination from another source. Site in full sun to open shade in almost any draining soil. Once established Butcher's Broom exhibits very good drought tolerance. Established potted Butcher's Broom via division.
