Albizia julibrissin
Persian Silk Tree
Plant Type:
TREESAlbizia julibrissin - Persian Silk Tree. A lovely small to medium-sized fast growing tree. Leaves are refined, ferny bi-pinnate and compound maturing bluish green with lighter glaucous undersides often emerging with a purplish tinge. Flowers are large, broad right side up shaving brushes in pink. Very soft in appearance each flower is made up of a dense multitude of 1-inch or longer fine filaments in May down south until sometime in August in the northern end of its range. Ours are seed grown from a hardier group; I believe ours are descendants from a tree or trees which had been grown at Arnold Arboretum for years. These are especially better-suited to those in the north who wish to grow this handsome woody. Progeny for most will suffer in a short amount of time at -5F; ours should harbor greater forbearance but, please, don't push your luck. Seed pods, 1-inch wide and 5 to 7 inches long dangle from late season into winter and possibly til the following spring. "Usually becoming uglier with age" is what M. Dirr tells us about the seed pods... sadly, this observation can be made and unfortunately said about most of us, too. Sad emoji here. Fertile draining ground in full to nearly full sun. Established potted Persian Silk Tree seed grown.
