Ceanothus americanus – Showy oval inflorescence are packed with tiny white florets. The aggregate of florets balloon atop the simple light green serrated summer leaves on this low-grower. New Jersey Tea is an exceptional draw for butterflies, many species of beneficial pollinators and hummingbirds plus exhibits good deer resistance. Full sun in sandy to moderately good soils Ceanothus americanus is drought and lime tolerant once established and is also nitrogen fixing. You will get better performance in better soil but do note: it requires plenty of sun. Dried leaves steeped will brew a quite good, caffeine-free tea. Amerindians utilized roots and bark to treat sore throats and fevers plus a myriad of other applications.
