Callirhoe involucrata
Winecups
Plant Type:
SUN PERENNIALSCallirhoe involucrata - 2 sizes: Big tap roots established in 2-qt. squares' smaller established plants in our 3.5 Deep size. Winecups is one of only a handful of species perennials that flowers all through the growing season. The deep red-purple cupped flowers face the sky beginning in northeastern Connecticut in late May and continue all through the summer into autumn opening in continual procession atop the pool of green leaves. The clean, verdant, deep green foliage is reminiscent of perennial geranium foliage and retains its good looks throughout the growing season. And as stems stretch along the ground some may self-layer as they wend. If Winecups is happy it will also self-sow; for us this has always occurred among the mother plants – it has never been a nuisance. Also known as Poppy Mallow, Callirhoe foliage lays upon the ground from three to five inches deep but grows so thickly into a wide-spreading mat, three to five across, as to be weed-squelching. Plant in scrabbled average to impoverished soil as the crown and parsnip-like root will rot in a too-rich soil. Site in full, blazing sun. This is a perfect perennial in the cactus garden and a good bee and butterfly plant. We have ours accompanying various sedums, Asclepias tuberosa (Butterfly Weed) and ball cacti, Clematis freemontii and Potentilla (syn. Sibbaldiopsis) tridentata. For a hot color, all-season and naturalistic extravaganza add some California Poppies to the mix: Callirhoe and Eschscholzia will delight you with a non-stop spectacular on the stage of your garden. Enjoy the show! This species is mainly from the central U.S., checker-boarded in the east and west. Seedling grown.
