Vaccinium macrocarpum 'Pilgrim'

Cranberry

Plant Type:

BROADLEAF EVERGREEN SHRUBS

Vaccinium macrocarpum 'Pilgrim' – This is a good producer of culinary quality cranberries. The fruits are large and bright red. The small oval leaves on this worthy selection turn rich red on long wiry stems as the temperatures cool; when studded with fruit this is quite a sight if the cranberries are not harvested late in the growing season. The overall shrub is like a wild head of hair laying relatively flat on the ground. This will make a beautiful piece of patchwork in a quilt of heaths and heathers – a very different texture though requiring similar conditions. It will also form a striking ground cover planted en masse. Site in full sun planted in acid fertile evenly moist sandy loam for best results; as with many ericaceous shrubs they do not respond well to dry soils. As with most if not all of broad leaf evergreens spring planting is best. Cutting grown.
