Stachyurus praecox 'Oriental Sun' (syn. ‘Aureo-variegata’) – This is a really beautiful arching shrub for climates warmer than our own. Early Spiketail has elegant dangling chains of buff yellowish flowers very early season, mid to late winter in southern climes often blooming with the hellebores. The foliage is handsomely variegated with broad creamy yellow. Deep mahogany red stems add to this under-utilized shrub’s character. Sometimes decent golden autumn foliage tints complete the show. Plant Stachyurus praecox ‘Aureo-variegata’ in any moderately good garden soil sited in full to part sun. If I could grow it here, believe me, I would for it is a marvel! Spring planting is strongly advised towards the northern part of its hardiness range. Cutting grown.
