Spiraea x bumalda 'Neon Flash'

Spirea

Plant Type:

DECIDUOUS SHRUBS

Spiraea x bumalda ‘Neon Flash’ – The dark green foliage is flushed with some bronze-maroon upon emerging. Corymbs of deep yet bright pink flowers, very showy, appear for a long season and great numbers in summer. Some recurrent flowering usually occurs. In autumn the foliage becomes infused with red and burgundy tones and is handsome set with any shrub with brighter autumn tones. Winter wood is sienna brown while the browned corymbs remain on the shrub. Michael Dirr lists this wonderful shrub as a cultivar of S. japonica. ‘Neon Flash’ is a lovely long blooming workhorse-of-a-shrub that would be well-used in the shrub border, as a low hedge, in the foundation garden and even as structural bones in the perennial garden. It is much ignored by gardeners - we don't sell nearly enough of these and it is so worthy. We have one growing 20 years as of 2019 placed prominently in a garden in proximity to our back deck that we view daily on our to and fro to the back part of our nursery. We love it.

Genus Overview: Spiraea

Common Name: Spirea

Spireas are useful shrubs of easy temperament. Making terrific fillers, hedgers and many fantastic foundation shrubs they are renowned for their toughness. They can down face taller shrubs and conifers and are versatile enough to be easily worked into herbaceous gardens where they will provide year round structure. Many are of Asian origin but we have also some fine New World counterparts. Most are happier in more sun. And though drought tolerant they will be more content in fertile conditions. All of the following are cutting grown.
