Citrus trifoliata 'Flying Dragon'

Hardy Orange

Plant Type:

DECIDUOUS SHRUBS

Citrus trifoliata 'Flying Dragon' (form. Poncirus trifoliata 'Flying Dragon') - Add to the amazing interest of the straight species is the gently curved, undulating branches found on 'Flying Dragon' a compact and more densely-branched form, 'Flying Dragon'. With downward-facing hooked barbs on the contorted stems it's easy to imagine the flight pattern of a dragon on a shrub upon which Morticia would dote in her conservatory. Small white flowers borne in early to mid-spring are imbued with orange blossom fragrance. Small trifoliate leaves are glossy green and often turn yellow, sometimes with some orange and red in the mix in autumn – just beautiful against the olive-green evergreen branches. Small green oranges mature to a tawny tan-orange shade persistent for much of the winter dangling among the green stems. 'Flying Dragon' planted in full blazing sun in a xeric garden at QGN is very much at home, is growing well and for the first time produced oranges in the summer/autumn of 2010. It has produced fruit annually since. It's safe to say that Poncirus trifoliata is self-pollinating. Established potted Hardy Orange, seed grown; these come true or generally true from seed but we select only those with the most contorted growth for sale. Please - if you live towards the northern end of its range then we advise you to purchase and plant in spring.
