Paeonia obovata – This lovely woodland peony flowers in early summer with showy, single pink flowers, weeks later than P. japonica. October into November in northeastern Connecticut, the seed pods, like large medieval jesters’ hats split open to reveal a brilliant crimson, fleshy backdrop, a foil to the pollinated dark blueberry-like fruits. The late season interest lasts for many weeks and is almost like a second flowering making for striking interest in the very late season woodland garden. Foliage remains clean for us - right into autumn sometimes picking up gold to reddish overtones before hard cold takes it down. Site in fertile draining soil in part, dappled to open shade. Pot grown peony from seed or division.
