Neillia sinensis

Chinese Neillia

Plant Type:

DECIDUOUS SHRUBS

Neillia sinensis Chinese Neillia, a very worthy member of the Rosaceae adorned with attractive raspberry-like leaves on narrow zig-zagging stems. The new leaves have a bronze-purple infusion and mature deep green. This is another worthy "old-fashioned" shrub that is now seldom encountered. The florets are rich deep pink on very showy dangling racemes from 1.5” to 2.5” long in early summer. Chinese Neillia blooms on old wood so if you desire a tighter, lower shrub then prune it only after flowering so as not to lose that season’s bloom. It’s a pretty tangle in the mixed shrub border and as it suckers may even have utilitarian application on embankments. It is not bothered by pests. For gardeners towards the northern end of its range spring planting is advised. Cutting grown.
