Hardy Impatiens

Plant Type:

POND & WETLAND PLANTS

Impatiens omeiana – This is a hardy stoloniferous impatiens for the woodland garden; in fact, this is probably 'Eco Hardy' but as we did not receive it with the moniker we are offering this and 'Eco Hardy' as two different clones. Impatiens omeiana flowers late season into the early autumn with large fragrant yellow blossoms intermediate in look between False Dragonhead and Penstemon. The emerging red-purple foliage is quite beautiful with leaves maturing dark green sporting a prominent white central vein. Leaves are set in a whorl on stalks touched with red-purple making for a handsome plant. If happy it can size-up fairly quickly forming a small colony. We have not attempted the hardy impatiens in USDA zone 5b but I expect in a sheltered micro-climate deeply mulched in autumn through early spring that it might survive. Site Impatiens omeiana in dappled, open or afternoon shade in fertile moisture retaining soil where it will colonize. It will also make a handsome and easy potted plant. I read on a blog site (I apologize that I do not recall which garden blog it may have been...) that someone had planted hardy impatiens with one of the relatively hardy purple-leaved oxalis; that sounds like a fetching combination. For gardeners towards the northern end of its range spring planting is advised. Established potted perennial from division.
