DECIDUOUS SHRUBSHydrangea macrophylla ‘Brunette’ (ex: Jonathan Lehrer) – 'Brunette' aka 'Merveille Sanguine' is a compact beauty cloaked in very deep dark, glossy green foliage. Leaves are of especially heavy substance. Showy mop heads in deep red-pink darken in color as they age. In late season the magnificent leaves turn glossy brownish bronze and are usually infused with glowing red. Wow! This is a great mop head. ‘Brunette’ blooms on old wood.

Genus Overview: Hydrangea macrophylla
Common Name: Mop Head Hydrangea
Most of these are Mop Head Hydrangea forms (hortensia) with large domed flowers. They bloom for many weeks end to end beginning in early summer and lasting into autumn. Any lace cap flower forms will be noted. Some of our selections are “old wood” bloomers: those whose stems must survive one winter. Then the flowers sprout from the wood that has survived that one winter. Others are “remontant” types: those that bloom on new season’s growth as well as old wood. All will be marked accordingly. These hydrangeas tend to want to be pink. Acid soils will result in blue flowers. All require fertile, moisture-retentive soil. All of the following cultivars are cutting grown.
