Eucomis x 'Oakhurst'

Pineapple Lily

Plant Type:

BULBS

Eucomis x 'Oakhurst' - Similar to 'Sparkling Burgundy' comes this extraordinary Pineapple Lily with apparent added hardiness. The dark burgundy-red strap-shaped leaves are stunners in a prized container or used as a contrasting novelty plant in the garden; in either case this fantastic perennial will have you fanning yourself in disbelief! The dramatic flower in summer does take on the general look of a pineapple with the buds opening into purple-pink florets from deep dark burgundy buds with a tuft atop the structure that passes for the foliage atop the popular edible tropical bromeliad. The inforescence can stand 4 feet or taller over the burgundy strap-shaped leaves that might be as short as 2 feet but may approach 3 feet on larger, more established bulbs. These extraordinary flowers have been magnets for all manner of winged creatures of the insect persuasion. We suspect that it may actually survive better under the protective cover of snow. In areas with less certain snow blankets a heavy mulch may be beneficial during the cold months. Dramtic, clumping with slow increase. Keep drier in winter. Division.
