Camellia chekiangoleosa - This Chinese species displays glorious deep red single flowers with a plush boss of yellow stamens. Petal edges are loosely creped and crimped. A near relative to C. japonica its flowers are larger than C. japonica, the species. It is a large grower also reaching heights of nearly 20 feet. Its fruits by late season can achieve the size of tennis balls. In China the seeds of this fine shrub are harvested and processed for edible oil. It has been reported that this handsome species may be hardy in USDA zone 6b. In that it lives in high mountainous regions between 600 and 1300 meters it may well be hardy in our zone 6b. Should you make the leap plant it sheltered in a spot that protects from harsh winter wind. Plant in lighter, moist sandier soils with added organic matter to fertile ground with a Ph from neutral to acid on the spectrum between 5 and 7.
