Lobelia siphilitica 'Mistassinica' - This dwarf form of Great Blue Lobelia produces spikes of blue to blue-purple florets from leafy mounds. Florets are distinct exhibiting 2 upper lobes subtended with 3 lower lobes. 'Mistassincia' may be dwarf but flowers are full-sized. And, yes, "siphilitica" refers to syphilis which Amerindians used to treat the malady. Plant in fertile, organic rich ground that is moist. This fine relative dwarf may be of garden origin - we're not sure; the species grows natively in the eastern three-quarters of states plus Ontario, New Brunswick and Nove Scotia. I'm always delighted when I stumble upon it in the wild. Possible uses are in the casual border, wild garden and even in a rain garden. Part sun to three-quarters shade and even open shade in the southern end of its range; 'Mistassinica' will tolerate full sun exposure in the north if soil moisture is consistent. Established potted perennial from division.
