Paeonia lutea var. ludlowii - This species tree peony carries bright, sunny yellow single peony flowers in spring, 3 to 4 per shoot. Each flower is cupped, casual and very showy. The boss of stamens is in a slightly darker, deeper shade. Leaves are medium green, glaucous below. A single leaf is compound. divided generally into 9 leaflets and is deeply cut. The overall appearance of the shrub is quite handsome. The Tibetan Peony harbors the potential to grow as tall as 8 even 9 feet so don't be entirely surprised if it decides to stretch until you're looking up with an increasingly angled head towards the top. Plant in mostly sunny exposure set in fertile to average ground. Also known as Ludlow's Peony this boisterous shrub is adaptable to both clay and sandy soil though it will probably be happiest in a better mix. It is also adaptable to Ph as long as extremes are avoided. The second moniker is for Frank Ludlow who left us in 1972; the shrub was introduced to the trade in 1936.
