Cyrilla racemiflora 'Tom Patrick'

Titi

Plant Type:

DECIDUOUS SHRUBS

Cyrilla racemiflora 'Tom Patrick' - This Titi (now don't get fresh!) is a compact form of an underutilized shrub growing to 5 feet. Usually this shrub grows to as much as 20 feet tall. So, this dwarf is a find. Racemes composed of arrays of long stems are covered in countless fragrant white florets, each stem is Veronica-like spire. Flowers are a draw for all manner of pollinators that will buzz-applaud as nectar collection progresses. Leaves are semi-evergreen - more so in southern climes; they are just slow to drop off. Titi, also known as Swamp Titi, Littleleaf Titi, He-Hucklberry, Leatherwood, Red Titi, White, Titi, Black Titi and Palo Colorado (does this last one seem out of place? Kinda like those acuity tests given to students asking which one does not belong... But Leatherwood seems wrong, too. What the hell is He-Huckleberry? What, no She-Huckleberry??? Seems potentially sexist... okay okay, back to it:) USDA claims Titi (I'm sticking with Titi) is found from Virginia and all southern states in a band that line the coast to Texas. This plant may also be found in Delaware. This garden worthy form was found by Ron Determann of the Atlanta Botanical Garden and Tom Patrick who headed the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. Like its bigger brethren it will want to colonize a spot. Perfect in the casual garden, an element in the larger landscape, a transition plant from the cultivated garden and the wild or as a component in a wildlife (or not) hedgerow. Full to part sun in fertile,
