Baptisia aberrans (form. Baptisia australis var. aberrans) - a naturally occurring compact variety of Blue Wild Indigo, dwarf by comparison to its big brother. Taxonomists have determined that this may very well be a distinct species so Michael Dirr has told me; in that, it may be listed as Baptisia aberrans. Though the plant is shorter the flowers are full-sized; the inflorescence stands alone 22 inches tall. Wild Blue Indigo is an excellent wildlife plant helping numerous species of skippers as well as emerging queen bumble bees. And this compact variety will have applications nearer the front of the perennial border, in the wildlife garden, the rock garden and in the casual meadow. Found in a few spotty counties ranging from Virginia to Alabama this is not commonly encountered in the wild. Full sun or close to it in average to fertile draining soil.
