Corylus fargesii

Farges Hazelnut

Plant Type:

TREES

Corylus fargesii - Farges Hazelnut, mostly found in arboreta, is a remarkable tree with resplendent bark reminiscent of River Birch in shades of brown, salmon and gray. It will form a remarkable specimen. Prior to the emergence of the simple leaves come the male and female catkins - yellow, long, pendulous and very showy. These dangle in clusters up to 2.5 inches long. Thrives in moist silty sand but is content in any well-drained soil on the acid side of the Ph spectrum. Cutting grown or from seed. Established potted Farges Filbert named for Paul Guillaume Farges, a 20th century missionary/plant collector. I was struck by it having seen it at Arnold Arboretum. One would be fantastic; three planted in a triangle formation would triple the impact. Half to full sun in fertile draining soil. Established potted Farges Hazelnut.
