Clethra barbinervis ‘Takeda Nishiki’ - Clethra barbinervis ‘Takeda Nishiki’ is an extraordinary variegated Japanese Clethra with all foliage splashed and stippled pink, white and green. The foliage ages to green and white with some remaining pink in the petioles. It picks up some red to gold tones in the foliage come autumn. It’s a beauty! This is a still quite rare selection and destined to find its way in the hearts and landscapes of an increasing number of gardeners. We assume that the flowers are typical 6” to 8” cone-shaped very sweetly fragrant panicles which bloom in mid-late summer. We also believe that in time 'Takeda Nishiki' will grow to be an imposing specimen, much taller than the 8 to 10-foot designation. Deep cinnamon brown bark exfoliates on older plants adding to winter interest. Northern customers: RESIST the TEMPTATION... for us guys (and gals) we strongly recommend spring planting only. And protect it with mulch, stakes and burlap during its first winter at least. It's worth it though - 'Takeda Nishiki' is beautiful. Plant in fertile soil in partly shaded to full sun conditions. Cutting grown.
