Rohdea chinensis var. chinensis 'Taiwan' (syn: Rohdea watanabei, Tupistra watanabei) – This is the extraordinary Sacred Lily of Taiwan. Its tough, deep green and narrow leaves can grow to 3 feet long. Green flowers like corn cobs on spikes up to 2 feet tall mature a soft orange tint. If pollinated showy red fruits develop in autumn. This is a dramatic, rarefied plant for the serious woodland gardener, striking and dramatic where it can be grown... we wish we could grow it outdoors! Although, after a recent especially harsh winter Tony Avent reported that these came through virtually unscathed in North Carolina; that's impressive! So, Rohdea chinensis var. chinensis 'Taiwan' may be hardier than known - still to be tested. Open to dappled shade in fertile soil. Site in a sheltered spot to protect Rohdea chinensis var. chinensis'Taiwan' from harsh winter winds in the northern end of its range. Dudes... this is a “must have”. For gardeners towards the northern end of its range spring planting is strongly advised - please wait. Established pot grown division.
