Chaenomeles japonica ‘Kuro’ – 'Kuro' is a deep dark red-flowering quince. The only one of which I know that is equally rich and dark, and perhaps darker is listed below, ‘Kurokoji’; it is definitely deeper, darker and richer than 'Texas Scarlet'. 'Kuro' is wider than tall with the glowering jewels of flowers studded among its branches. Both ‘Kuro’ and ‘Kurokoji’ form green fruits maturing to a soft yellow that can be used to make jelly. This plant is also listed as C. speciosa ‘Kuro’ by some accounts. There is some confusion to be sorted through before the final taxonomical designation of members of the quince clan can be finally determined. Site ‘Kuro’ in full to nearly full sun planted in fertile draining soil. Once established it will demonstrate drought tolerance. Cutting grown.
