Calycanthus x raulstonii ‘Hartlage Wine’ – This is the first hybrid between Calycanthus floridus x Calycanthus sinensis, and what a hybrid it is! With great hybrid vigor ‘Hartlage Wine’ provides us with a display of large dark red flowers, larger than C. floridus and without so much chocolate in the mix. Ours blooms for many weeks with some recurrence during the rest of the growing season. This has been true on our young shrub; whether or not this repeat flowering characteristic may continue as the plant ages remains to be seen. The overall effect of ‘Hartlage Wine’ is almost Magnolia-like in the landscape. Broad glossy foliage is a rich deep green remaining unsullied through the growing season. This large shrub has grown quickly for us in rich, moisture retaining loam achieving a height of 8’ x 6’ in just 4 years. Site ‘Hartlage Wine’ in full to mostly sunny conditions planted in fertile moisture-retentive soil to which organic matter has been added. For gardeners in the northern tiers of its range we strongly recommend spring planting. Established potted Hybrid Allspice, cutting grown.
