Tassel Rue

Plant Type:

SHADE PERENNIALS

Trautvetteria caroliniensis (ex: Seneca Hill) – This is the underused Tassel Rue or False Bugbane, an easy natured woodland perennial with pure white clustered Thalictrum-like flowers set in umbels and a green to yellowish button nub at each heart of each floret. Flowers are beautifully structured, of good substance and very clean in appearance. They stand on strong wiry stems above very handsome rounded deeply lobed leaves. Flowers look like a small exploding fireworks. Bloom time is late spring and summer. It's undemanding, extremely attractive, low maintenance and should definitely be in more gardens! These come from east of the Mississippi but there are western North American populations more properly known as Trautvetteria caroliniensis var. occidentalis. Specifically, they hale from Pennsylvania, south to Georgia in mountain woods or from the Prairie in south Indiana and western Illinois and also found on limestone bluffs in s. Missouri. Good butterfly plant. Site this well-behaved clumping perennial in open shade to part shade planted in any decent woodland soil. Division or seed grown.
