Rubus pentalobus (syn. R. calycinoides) – The Taiwan Creeping Blackberry is a mat-forming raspberry with very rugose dark green leaves, rather hirsute on hairy stems. The leaves are shallowly and gently lobed and are densely set making for a solid ground cover. White flowers form upright light orange raspberry fruits that are delicately sweet. Autumn brings dark chocolate-bronze to maroon shades. This is a surprisingly hardy Taiwanese plant, hardy for us in USDA zone 5b; it sometimes gets whacked by the winter but consistently re-sprouts from the crowns come spring. We also suspect that in even climates with persistent snow cover that the Taiwan Creeping Blackberry... or Raspberry may do perfectly well. It is lovely with smaller ornamental grasses, on a slope or with colchicum popping through the mat of foliage in the autumn. Site Rubus pentalobus in full to part sun sited in any good garden soil that drains. Cutting grown.
